Cafe Culture

With summer on its way and the days getting longer, we felt the time was ripe for a brief précis of some of the best eateries in Newmarket, Parnell and Mt Eden. Not wanting to merely compile a list of my own personal favourites, I put Facebook to work, asking my friends to submit their list for the best of the best. Here’s a summary of what they said…

Mt Eden
Ironique on Mt Eden Rd, make tremendous coffee and delectable sweet treats, served in a sort of artistic installation of iron doors, lamps, basins, and, well, basically everything. Scarlett Slimms and Lucky was a common choice with great food, décor and a first rate bar. The Mt Eden Cloak Room is one of my personal favourites, it gets warm afternoon sun and has excellent tapas in a relaxed setting.

Newmarket
In Khyber Pass, you “can’t go past a laksa at Selera.” Bambina in Teed St, continues to serve great coffee, and it’s ‘half and half’ is a great breakfast option. The organic, vegetarian food at Wise Cicada in Crowhurst St, came up repeatedly as one of the best businesses in Newmarket, with one person saying they “could live there.” Archie’s Pizzeria in Davis Crescent is a good option for those who like a little more grease in their engine.

Parnell
Rosie in Gladstone Road is excellent. Their rhubarb and nut granola, fried chicken and aged scotch fillet are delicious. Al Brown’s Best Ugly Bagels – need I say more? 46 & York deserves a mention – a marvelous place to sample a pulled pork tostada and a G&T in the afternoon sun. One friend suggested taking a picnic hamper to the Domain – a great idea with the summer jazz in the park season soon to commence. At the high end, “Cibo is tops.” Oh, and if you haven’t tried it yet, the Espresso Workshop in Falcon Street does arguably the best coffee in town.
