Best in Architecture: Box™

Box Clever

We chat with Nat Jakich, the “building brains” of Box™ about how the architect builder studio has revolutionised the industry.

Could you share the inspiration behind Box™ and how it offers a different experience?

Core to our ethos is the idea of a ‘joined-up’ team of designers, builders and other professionals working together – some with over 30 years’ experience. We love the process of designing and building homes. Our team brings a wealth of experience in residential design and construction, working closely with a trusted network of professionals and subcontractors with whom we’ve built long-standing relationships. We support local business and suppliers – promoting them through Collective by Box – so it’s just part of our fabric. This strong sense of loyalty – both within our team and across our network – enables us to consistently deliver enjoyable, seamless experiences for every client.

What architectural styles do you offer?

If you were to pin us down, we’d say: “Modern Contemporary with a focus on soft and natural materials to finish.” The styles depend on our clients who come to us for the combined design and build approach, so we have been involved in everything from villa renovation to one-off architectural buildings.

How do you approach energy efficiency and eco-friendly building practices without compromising on style?

We don’t, explicitly – it’s just part of good design. North-facing doors or a concrete floor are good for passive solar design, and just make good sense if you’re designing a comfortable living space.

How do you see Kiwi attitudes toward housing and lifestyle evolving?

While the desire for a secure, personal space remains strong, there’s a growing appreciation for homes that support connection – spaces that make it easy to gather with whānau and friends, as simple as open-plan kitchens and dining areas. In our larger cities, the future of housing lies in greater residential density within walking distance of reliable public transport. Most New Zealanders are fortunate to live near incredible public spaces and recreational areas, meaning the traditional quarter-acre dream is giving way to a more connected way of living. This shift is not just a necessity, it’s an opportunity.

Any projects that have been especially challenging, or satisfying?

Tough question – they all have unique challenges! Architectural homes on steep or tight sections are challenging at the best of times, so delivering them is exciting. The memorable ones are often triggered by a client returning to us years later, for something as simple as needing a specification or as big as looking at building number two. When your clients are comfortable enough to stay in touch for a lifetime that is for me, project satisfaction.

Any upcoming plans or projects that you’d like to share?

We have been in this business for a long time now. Over the next five years, we’d like to spend more time working on the business than in it! Bringing in new leaders and passion to our team and delivery is a goal that’s tougher than building a house! I love the idea of being there at any time for anyone in the team, but would love to eventually put someone else in the driver’s seat while being able to keep a careful eye on how projects are delivered and ensuring the happiness of our clients.
