This project was a deeply personal reimagining of a home. The kitchen is a space designed to feel immersive and expressive – a retreat that reflects the vision of both owners.
Designer Michelle Gillbanks of Kitchens By Design became involved in this project from day one. The clients were searching for the right designer who could bring their dream to life. With lots of great ideas between them, Michelle offered guidance on the blend of materials and with thoughtful communication brought together a shared vision.
“At the heart of this transformation is a kitchen that commands attention – a space where form and function are perfectly balanced. Floor-to-ceiling band-sawn timber veneer cabinetry, finished in a deep grey wash, brings both drama and warmth,” says Michelle.
Its textured surface creates a cocoon-like atmosphere, while open shelving breaks up the vertical expanse, offering space for curated displays that reflect the homeowners’ personality and style.
The central island serves as the anchor of the space. The countertop, with its dramatic dark brown background crisscrossed with veins of gold, introduces a sense of sophistication, enhancing the rustic palette. More than a workspace, the island is a natural gathering point for their guests.
Flowing effortlessly from the kitchen, the adjoining dining and living areas continue the story of texture and contrast. Earthy tones and dark finishes pair seamlessly with the raw natural timber flooring, creating a cozy, grounded vibe that feels both elevated and lived in.
This home is defined by contrasts – light and dark, smooth, and textured, modern, and rustic. Its north-facing aspect floods the interiors with natural light, highlighting the richness of the materials and enhancing the sense of atmosphere. Every element, from the cabinetry to the flooring, has been chosen with intention to support both functionality and mood.
