Named after the te reo meaning ‘to relax’, Parohe is a gorgeous wellness retreat cradled on Kawau Island in our Hauraki Gulf.
Positioned over a peaceful bay and surrounded by native forest, Parohe allows guests to move at their own rhythm, whether that means full days of activity or quiet moments of rest.
Their Relax and Rejuvenate Retreats have been thoughtfully designed to restore both body and mind by way of delicious, nourishing meals; daily movement classes like yoga and meditation, or pilates and stretch; or a gentle wellness workshop.
On top of that, there’s free access to Parohe’s scenic walking trails, land and water activities, and wellness spaces – including a pool, sauna, and open-air baths.
For those in search of something more romantic, the Couples Retreat includes all the above, plus a private dinner picnic under the stars, a hands-on dessert-making session, and a playful Latin dance class to bring you even closer!
Saul Derber tells Verve about his experience on the retreat…
What was your first impression of the retreat, and how did it meet expectations?
We had never done anything like this before so were unsure what to expect. Our first impressions were of it being a lovely, spacious setting that feels remote, special and tranquil all at once! The staff were very welcoming staff, and we were with a small, friendly group. The accommodation and shared areas are clean and modern, and there’s lots of clever design and layouts.
Favourite activities?
We really enjoyed the dancing class, HIIT pilates, and yoga and mindfulness/meditation.
Was there a particular wellness practice that most stood out?
Walking on moss barefoot!
Did you meet other couples, and did that add to the experience?
Yes, it was a really nice mix of people which made the weekend so much more memorable.
Has anything from the retreat become part of your daily life?
Yes, it reinforced the need to eat more raw foods and get out in nature more.
What advice would you give to couples considering a wellness retreat?
We’ve already recommended it to all our friends! It’s hard to beat for location, accommodation and choice of alone couple time and group time, with a perfect sprinkling of fun activities.
Would you do it again?
Definitely!
