The Odd One Out – Verve chats to the founders

Damian and Tricky began The Odd One Out with a shared desire to fill the gap in the men’s clothing industry for high quality, affordable menswear.

You’ve stated OOO was born from both passion and frustration. You’re obviously passionate
about men’s fashion, what were you frustrated with?

Our frustrations are no doubt similar to most fashion conscious men in New Zealand – a lack of truly high quality garments that are comfortable, can suit many occasions and are priced reasonably. Until OOO our options were very limited unless we wanted to pay a high premium.

Who are the ‘odd ones out’ that you consider your target market?

The subtly stylish men within the supposed “middle aged” demographic that don’t want to dress like 20 year olds to be fashionable, nor need highly visible branding to broadcast their need for quality. Their choice of garments already does that for them.

What’s it’s like being two good mates in business and how do you both play to your strengths?
Had either of you come from a background in fashion/clothing design?

It’s been positively surreal. We knew what each other’s strengths were going to be from the start and this has further cemented our friendship and belief in one another and how the market is long overdue for a brand like ours. We’ve both got an overridingly strong focus on the smaller details and design elements that are all too often overlooked.

Damian, has over 20 years experience in menswear and fashion both here in New Zealand & the U.K. That knowledge and vast experience has been integral to the development of OOO.

How do you elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary?

By only using high quality materials that feel and look good to wear with finer details and design elements at the forefront of everything we produce.

What has been your best selling piece of clothing so far and why do you think this is?

It’s neck and neck between the Bolivar t-shirt and our 5P (five pocket) jean style chinos. They can both be worn in a variety of environments and work incredibly well when put together when going “out out”.

And your personal favourite pieces to wear?

At this time of year it has to be the Jefferson Hoodie. Perfect for being out and about on the weekend or lounging at home.
