Tohu Wines

Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on the best wines for the month.

Tohu Wines entry into the New Zealand market in 1998 was not only as the world’s first Maori owned winery but also to become one of the regions’ most sustainable. Fast forward twenty-five years and Tohu today is producing a range of varietals expressing purity and intensity from grapes grown in Marlborough. With many successes under its belt Tohu has also been acknowledged with numerous local and international awards and accolades for its wines.

Based in the upper reaches of Awatere Valley there’s an authenticity to Maori culture at Tohu that runs deep into New Zealand’s most famous wine region with wines produced from grapes planted a decade ago that are starting to show their potential.

Bruce Taylor winemaker who joined the winery in 2008 is an integral part of the enthusiast’s viticultural team in taking Tohu wines to another level.
