A good skincare routine with skincare products tailored to your unique skin needs will  ensure that your skin barrier is functioning at its absolute best, as well as making sure that your skin is prepped and primed for any treatments you undergo and ready to go. ultimately aid in faster healing post appointment.

The essentials:

  1. Cleanser

Our skin is constantly subjected to pollution, antibodies, dirt, grime and everything in-between, all as a result of our everyday excursions, so finding the perfect facial cleanser for your skin is essential. The perfect cleanser is supposed to help in removing makeup, dirt, excess oil, dead skin cells and pollutants without stripping away your skin’s natural oils, as these are essential to it staying plump and hydrated.

  1. Toner

The toner myth tells us that this product is harsh and predominantly alcohol based, and yes, this was true at one point in time. Now days, toners  do not your skin of its essential oils as well as the remnants of the day, but is instead a kiss of hydrating nutrients to your skin. Your good hydrating toner will prep your skin and aid in the absorption of all of the good stuff to follow, ie all the ingredients found in your moisturisers, serums, etc. Great ingredients to search for when on the lookout for a new toner include hyaluronic acid, Vitamins C and E.

  1. Moisturiser

As we age, over time the skin gradually loses its ability to retain moisture, and our everyday activities can strip your skin of its natural hydrating oils. As well being the final step to sealing in your prior products, moisturisers give your skin that essential dose of moisture it needs to help regenerate, which in turn also helps reduce signs of ageing and helps to balance your skins oil production. Supple, hydrated skin? Yes please!

  1. Retinol

The oh so famous retinol, the ultimate in defense against fine lines and wrinkles and one of the best skincare products to help achieve a healthy glow. Introducing retinol into your routine will boost cellular turn-over, providing aid against the signs of ageing, dehydrated skin, and pigmentation. It also helps to regulate oily skin, minimizing those dreaded breakouts.

  1. SPF

Sunscreen, a step never to be skipped. SPF protects our skin against UV damage, preventing premature ageing signs, hyperpigmentation, and lowers the risk of skin cancer. Don’t’ forget to apply your SPF all year round, because even if it’s overcast your skin is absorbing up to 80% of sun’s harmful rays!

  1. Dermarolling

Dermarolling is a great at-home treatment, using a hand held dermaroller to microneedle the skin, to create small puncture wounds, to help boost collagen production and increase hydration. This little handheld device will help in improving your skins texture, tone and overall appearance, as well as increasing your skincare products efficacy and absorption by up to 90%.

  1. Facial Massage

Introducing regular face massaging into your skincare routine is great for lymphatic drainage which can help with your skin’s inflammation and puffiness (who hasn’t experienced the dreaded puffy eyes first thing in the morning). There are many different tools that you can look in to add to your collection such as gua shas or face rollers, or even better, you can just use your hands!

  1. Healthy lifestyle

Healthy lifestyle habits such as a good sleep schedule, regular exercise and balanced diet heavily contributes to our overall skin’s condition. Avoiding high-sugar content foods and replacing them with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables and healthy fats from foods such as avocado or fish will give your skin those ingredients crucial for radiant and glowing skin. Ingredients such as beta carotene, vitamins C and E and zinc can also greatly contribute to healthy-looking skin.. Keeping hydrated is also a key step in a healthy lifestyle, helping to rid the skin and the body of toxins, and strengthening your skins protective barrier to prevent excess loss of fluids.

  1. General hygiene

Hygiene is always important, but the pandemic has put a major emphasis on general hygiene practices, and these habits should also be applied to your skincare routine. Sanitising your hands regularly is essential so we don’t transfer germs and dirt onto our skins surface. Other great habits to introduce include washing hi-touch items regularly such as your pillowcase, make up brushes and sponges, tweezers, your phone, and your masks!
