Beyond Beauty

The truth about labiaplasty – a conversation women are finally having.

WORDS
Dr Katarzyna Mackenzie, Plastic Surgeon

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a procedure that reduces the labia minora. While often thought of as cosmetic surgery, most women choose it to relieve physical discomfort, irritation during exercise, or difficulties with clothing and intimacy.

Who is a good candidate?

Every woman is different. The best candidates are women whose anatomy causes symptoms or who feel self-conscious. The decision should always be personal – not influenced by social media or unrealistic beauty standards.

Is it becoming more common?

Yes. As conversations around women’s health become more open, more women feel comfortable seeking advice. Increased awareness has helped reduce the stigma surrounding intimate procedures.

Is recovery difficult?

Most patients return to desk-based work within a week. Swelling is expected initially, while exercise and sexual activity are usually avoided for around a month.

Will anyone be able to tell I’ve had surgery?

The aim is a natural result that respects each woman’s anatomy. Once healed, scars are typically very discreet.

What is the biggest misconception about labiaplasty?

That it’s purely about appearance. In my practice, women seek surgery because they experience physical discomfort or limitations in everyday life.

What advice would you give someone considering labiaplasty?

Start with a consultation. A good plastic surgeon will explain your options, answer your questions honestly, and help you decide whether surgery is the right choice for you. The goal isn’t perfection.
