Dr Katarzyna Mackenzie, Auckland-based plastic surgeon, talks about why plastic surgery is about much more than what happens in the operating theatre.
What do you think patients should consider when choosing plastic surgery?
Patients naturally think about the operation, the result and the cost. But I think there is an even more important question: who are you trusting to look after you? Surgery isn’t a product delivered identically by every surgeon.
What makes the surgeon’s judgement so important?
Technical skill matters enormously, but surgery is also a series of decisions. Is this the right operation? Is this patient suitable? Should we do less – or perhaps nothing at all? Good plastic surgery is as much about knowing when not to operate as knowing how to operate.
Does that relationship continue after surgery?
Absolutely. The operation may take only a few hours, but my responsibility doesn’t end when I leave theatre. I personally remain involved in my patients’ care throughout their recovery. If something doesn’t follow the expected course, I want to know about it.
What does personalised care mean in your practice?
I consult with you, plan your surgery, perform your operation and remain involved afterwards. That continuity is incredibly important to me.
What would you tell someone comparing surgeons?
Look beyond the procedure and the price. Consider qualifications, experience, and who will actually be there afterwards. You aren’t simply choosing an operation. You’re choosing whose judgement you will trust – with your body, your safety and your care.
