From Ma Rainey the mother of blues to Patti Smith the princess of punk. In every way, shape, form and genre, wahines have had a huge impact on music since the dawn of time. Throughout history, their impact has often been groundbreaking, polarising and controversial. Some, more polarising and controversial than others….ahem Yoko…
On our little island nation we have many incredible female musicians and in honour of International Women’s Day, this month’s playlist is highlighting new music from just a few of our talented kiwi wahines!
New Kiwi Wahine Music:
Beach Boy – Benee
Kinda Sorta Maybe – Franki August
Ache – Jaz Paterson
My Love – Ladyhawke
Optimist – Chelsea Jade
The Venus Project – Georgia Nott – Alright this one isn’t a single song it’s an album but it had to be mentioned because this project was written, organised and put together completely by a team of women!
HBIC – Gin Wigmore – Gin started a super cool project a few years ago called Girl Gang. She shares her songs with other non musical female artists who she admires so they can use them as inspiration to create artwork in their medium. Gin says she sees on tour and in life that women are critical of each other. “We’re judgemental and we’re unkind and I don’t want to play into that and be that anymore, so this project was a way to bring us together, celebrate women, realise and show the world that there is room for everyone. That there is room for all of us. There are ways to make and create art joyously rather than competitively.”
Sending peace, love and sunshine your way my lovely friends! Have a wonderful week. From your pal, Franki.
