Second Nature has been committed to delivering excellence in landscaping for decades. Founded in 1996, the company began by faithfully executing the creative visions of some of New Zealand’s leading garden designers.
Over time, it has evolved into a full-service landscaping company, offering design, construction, and maintenance – while continuing to collaborate closely with some of the country’s top designers.
“As the landscaping industry has grown more sophisticated, so too has Second Nature, embracing new technologies and methodologies to meet the demands of increasingly complex projects,” director Janet Clarke tells Verve. “With a highly skilled and experienced team, we consistently deliver intricate, high-quality projects that meet the exacting standards of contemporary clients. We are proud to have received multiple industry accolades, including the Supreme Award at the last two Registered Master Landscapers’ Landscapes of Distinction Awards.”
How do you respond to the wide range of client requirements?
No two clients – and no two gardens – are ever the same. Every project brings a unique combination of scale, style, and complexity. Our team is well-equipped to meet these challenges, offering flexibility and expertise across the board.
The key to every successful project is clear, responsive communication. From concept to completion, we work closely with our clients to ensure expectations are met – and ideally, exceeded. Whether we are collaborating with
a designer or leading a full-service transformation, our focus remains on delivering thoughtful, beautiful, and functional landscapes tailored to each individual brief.

How do you stay on top of landscaping trends, both globally and in New Zealand?
Many clients come with ideas sparked by overseas gardens. We love working with those ideas and also partner with leading NZ designers whose work extends beyond these shores.
Our 2025 Supreme Award-winning Garden, located in the heart of Ponsonby, is a great example – a space where the design by Damian Wendelborn was inspired by the work of a leading Italian designer. Both of our recent Supreme Award gardens incorporate strong elements of biodiversity, creating environments that support insect and birdlife – a growing priority for many of our clients.
Edible gardens, too, remain a popular and enduring trend. We have considerable experience in integrating fruit and vegetable production into elegant and productive outdoor spaces
How valuable is a garden in our increasingly busy lives?
A garden offers much more than visual appeal – it becomes a vital extension of your home and lifestyle. Great design transforms outdoor areas into spaces of beauty, productivity, and peace, but to realise a garden’s full potential and to maintain the value of your investment, careful planning and professional advice are essential – services that Second Nature delivers with pride.
