Buzzy Bee

Mobile hive takes 120,000 bees on North Island tour

This month, local beekeeper James Green from Hidden Honey is travelling from Auckland to Wellington in New Zealand’s first mobile beehive, with 120,000 passenger on board… bees!

James and his buzzing crew are hitting the road in a fully electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz, the modern evolution of the iconic VW Type 2 Kombi, a symbol of freedom, natural harmony, and the Flower Power movement. Now lovingly transformed into a fully functioning hive, the ID. Buzz is part of a unique journey to inspire everyday Kiwis to take small steps to help Aotearoa bloom.

The road trip follows the honey flow, the natural blooming of flowers as warmer weather moves south, and each stop has been chosen to align with nature’s rhythm.

James will be visiting farmers markets and local communities along the way, sharing stories from the hive, answering questions, and handing out wildflower seed packets to encourage planting bee-friendly blooms.
