A super sharp knife is but a small upgrade that can quietly transform your entire kitchen experience, and German brand HORL® has got it mastered. This cult culinary product is going mainstream!
Now officially available in Aotearoa, the knife sharpening system brings precision sharpening out of the ‘too hard’ basket and into everyday use – whether you’re cooking at home, at the bach, or firing up the barbecue.
HORL® strips the process back to something almost deceptively simple. A magnetic angle guide holds the blade securely in place, while a cylindrical sharpener rolls smoothly along the edge from heel to tip. There’s no guesswork, no complicated technique, just consistent, repeatable results. With two key angles (15° for finer blades and 20° for more robust, everyday knives), it covers the vast majority of what most people actually need.

The real appeal, though, is how considered the whole system feels. Made in Germany and built to last, these aren’t tools you hide in a drawer, they’re well-designed tools that dare to be displayed.
The range comprises three models that scale in both performance and refinement. The HORL®3 Cruise (RRP $209) is the entry point: straightforward, durable, and made from ocean-bound recycled plastic. It does the job cleanly, with a fixed setup and a stainless-steel disc for finishing – ideal for anyone who just wants sharp knives without overthinking or over-complicating things.

The HORL®3 (RRP $349) – our review product – is where the sweet spot sits. It’s the all-rounder, and the one most people should be looking at. Finished in oak or walnut, it feels properly premium without tipping into excess. More importantly, it introduces the HORL® Quick Lock system, meaning you can swap discs depending on how refined you want your edge. It comes preinstalled with a ceramic honing disc, giving a final, perfect polish. It’s simple enough for beginners, but with enough flexibility to satisfy anyone who actually cares about their knives.

At the top end, the HORL®3 Pro (RRP $819) leans into performance. With a planetary gearing system for faster sharpening and a six-angle selector. This one’s aimed at enthusiasts or those working with specialised blades. It’s beautifully engineered, but for most households, it’s more capability than necessity.
What HORL® gets right – especially with the Model 3 – is removing friction. It turns sharpening from a chore into something quick, satisfying… and even a little addictive!
