Winter Wonderlands

Four iconic winter spots!

Porters

The closest ski field to Christchurch, Porters sits around 90km west of the city just before the Arthur’s Pass park boundary. Its 285 hectares of slopes cater to all abilities, topping out at 1,995m with a 620m vertical drop. A cafe and equipment rental make it an easy day out.

Temple Basin

Temple Basin delivers an authentic, all-natural alpine experience for adventurous skiers. The 320-hectare field sprawls across four basins, with a 427m vertical drop and no road access — reaching the base requires a 45-minute uphill trek from the car park, 4km west of Arthur’s Pass Village (a goods lift handles your gear).

Mount Hutt & Methven

New Zealand’s most awarded ski resort, Mount Hutt sits 90 minutes from Christchurch and is renowned for reliable conditions and a season that stretches from early June to October – among the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. Its 365 hectares top out at 2,086m with an impressive 648m vertical drop and terrain for all abilities, from gentle learner runs to demanding off-piste. The Summit Six Chairlift doubles as a sightseeing tour with sweeping views across the Canterbury Plains to the Pacific.

Most visitors base themselves in Methven, a charming alpine town just 26km away. Small enough to feel like a community, big enough to keep you well fed and watered, Methven comes alive in winter with a great range of accommodation, lively après-ski, and a genuine Kiwi warmth that cements it a destination in its own right.

Hanmer Springs

Billed as New Zealand’s Alpine Spa Village, Hanmer Springs – 90 minutes northeast of Christchurch – is far more than a place to unwind. Year-round adrenaline pursuits including bungy jumping, jet-boating, and white-water rafting keep the pulse racing, while from early July to mid-September the Hanmer Springs Ski Area, 17km north of the village, draws winter sports enthusiasts to its 310m vertical drop and 1,769m summit. A mostly intermediate field, it also has runs for beginners and advanced skiers, and is home to New Zealand’s longest Poma lift. After the slopes, the historic thermal pools – a steaming outdoor complex of pools and spa treatments established in the mid-19th century – provide the perfect remedy for tired legs.
