Almost everyone experiences heartburn from time to time. After a large meal or a spicy dinner, that familiar burning sensation in the chest can seem like nothing more than an inconvenience. But when reflux becomes frequent, it may be your body’s way of telling you that something more significant is happening.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) occurs when stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the oesophagus. Common symptoms include heartburn, acid regurgitation, chest discomfort, chronic cough, hoarseness, excessive throat clearing, or a sensation of food sticking. While medications can provide excellent symptom relief, they do not always identify the underlying cause or detect damage that may already have occurred.
Long-standing reflux can lead to inflammation, narrowing of the oesophagus, or a condition called Barrett’s oesophagus, where the lining of the oesophagus changes over time. Although Barrett’s oesophagus does not usually cause additional symptoms, it is recognised as a risk factor for oesophageal cancer. Fortunately, when detected early, appropriate surveillance and treatment can significantly reduce this risk.
Not everyone with reflux requires further investigation. However, symptoms that persist despite medication, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, or recurrent vomiting should be discussed with your GP. Depending on your individual situation, an upper endoscopy (Gastroscopy) may be recommended. This simple procedure allows a specialist to examine the oesophagus and stomach directly, diagnose the cause of symptoms, and identify problems at an early stage.
