A Cold Spell? | Clinic 42

Is heating leaving your skin thirsty?

As temperatures drop, many people notice the same seasonal changes in their skin: increased dryness, tightness, dullness, and sensitivity.

While winter may bring cosy layers and warm indoor spaces, cold outdoor air and indoor heating can create one of the most challenging environments for skin health.

The main cause is a loss of moisture. Cold air contains less humidity than warm air, increasing transepidermal water loss, the process by which moisture evaporates from the skin. Indoor heating often compounds the problem by creating a warm but dry environment that further depletes the skin’s hydration levels. As a result, the skin barrier can become compromised, leading to flaking, redness, sensitivity, and a rough or uncomfortable texture.

At Clinic 42, we often see patients who find their usual skincare products are less effective during winter. This is because hydration and barrier support become even more important when the skin is exposed to seasonal environmental stressors.

A healthy skin barrier helps retain moisture while protecting against irritants and environmental damage. When the barrier is weakened, the skin struggles to maintain hydration regardless of how much moisturiser is applied. For this reason, winter skincare should focus on strengthening and repairing the skin barrier as a first priority.

One product we often recommend is Synergie Skin’s ÜberZinc, a multifunctional moisturiser designed to support and protect the skin during colder months. Formulated with 21% zinc oxide, it helps shield the skin from environmental stressors while providing antioxidant benefits. Jojoba, meadowfoam, and macadamia oils help reinforce the skin’s natural lipid barrier, reducing moisture loss and supporting long-lasting hydration. The result is skin that feels calmer, more comfortable, and better protected throughout winter.

For skin that feels particularly dry or depleted, an intensive hydration treatment can provide additional support. Synergie Skin’s MasquErase and Environ’s Focus Care Youth Revival Masque are excellent additions to a winter skincare routine. Used once or twice weekly, these treatments deliver a concentrated boost of hydration while supporting barrier repair. They help soothe stressed, dehydrated skin and restore moisture when cold air and indoor heating accelerate water loss. Applied overnight or as leave-on treatments, they can leave the skin looking plumper, softer, and more radiant by morning.

Another important consideration during winter is collagen. Natural collagen production declines with age, reducing the skin’s elasticity, firmness, and resilience. Seasonal factors such as low humidity and fluctuating temperatures can make the visible signs of collagen loss, including fine lines and crepey skin, more apparent.

This is where bio-remodelling treatments can play a valuable role. Unlike traditional volumising treatments, bio-remodellers stimulate collagen and elastin production while improving skin quality and hydration. The result is firmer, smoother, and more resilient skin with improved overall texture and radiance. For many patients, these treatments offer both a preventative and restorative approach to maintaining healthy skin throughout the year.

Winter does not have to mean dull, dehydrated skin. By combining barrier-supporting skincare, targeted hydration treatments, and collagen-stimulating solutions, it is possible to maintain healthy, resilient skin throughout the colder months.

If you are planning a winter escape to warmer climates, remember to review your skincare routine before travelling. Take particular care with vitamin A products and be mindful of any recent or upcoming IPL treatments, as increased sun exposure may require adjustments to your treatment plan.

At Clinic 42, we focus on strengthening skin health from the inside out through medical-grade skincare, professional treatments, and advanced bio-remodelling therapies.
