Black Swan
On the edge of Lake Rotorua at Kawaha Point, Black Swan Lakeside Boutique Hotel’s eight design-led suites offer a lovely air of intimacy, backed by a private jetty, sculpted Victorian-style gardens, a conservatory, an outdoor pool and spa pools – all set across roughly an acre of manicured grounds.
Suites range from Lake Front to Swan King and Swan Family, each with gas fires, heated tiled bathrooms and a private terrace looking over the courtyard, topiary garden or lake. There’s an on-site restaurant, too.
Not surprisingly, that intimacy and setting have made Black Swan a popular choice for weddings. The lakeside backdrop and sculpted gardens lend themselves naturally to romance, and the hotel has built a reputation as a destination for couples, from honeymoons to anniversary escapes as well.
Hana Lodge
Just 15 minutes from central Rotorua, Hana Lodge is set within 57 acres of lakeside grounds. At its heart is a carefully designed garden, where more than 10,000 hydrangeas bloom alongside a wealth of other flowers. Each season brings its own colours to the grounds. Paths lead through bamboo groves, past sculptures and wetlands, while cattle, sheep and alpacas graze beyond the gardens. Inside, artworks add another layer of discovery.
The main lodge has 12 suites, complemented by the separate four-bedroom Hana House. Guests can enjoy a swimming pool, spa pools, a sauna and a full-size tennis court.
From the upstairs restaurant and balcony, the view stretches across rolling farmland to Lake Rotorua. Breakfast, dinner and high tea are served daily. Rotorua’s geothermal and cultural attractions are a short drive away, and guests can even arrive by helicopter at the lodge’s own helipad.
Prince’s Gate
Across from the Government Gardens in the heart of Rotorua stands Prince’s Gate Hotel, a Victorian landmark with a story dating back to 1897. Step inside and its century-old character is everywhere, now paired with modern comfort: all 52 guestrooms and their bathrooms have recently been renovated.
Accommodation ranges from classic guestrooms and apartments with kitchens to a grand Presidential Suite and the standalone Garden House with its own garden. Guests can soak in the natural geothermal pools, indoors or out, or unwind in the sauna.
