Rebecca Logan Design is an Auckland-based interior design studio that creates relaxed-yet-refined “liveable luxury” interiors that “blend beauty with everyday practicality”.
“Since childhood, I’ve always been drawn to design,” Rebecca tells Verve. “I used to collect cardboard boxes to make houses for my barbie dolls, decorating each room!”
Having originally studied graphic design at university, Rebecca retrained in interior design while living in London and spent years honing her craft at top design houses.
“I love being able to try out new ideas and colour combos in other people’s homes. Every project and client is different. I love continually experimenting, creating and learning.”
How would you describe your design philosophy?
Most things in your home should be something you love. My mother would get frustrated when shopping with me because I’d say, “Yes, I like it, but I don’t love it.” This philosophy carries over into my design work. I love things to be beautiful but also comfortable, practical – even simple small things like a tea towel or fruit bowl. I love colour as I think it brings joy, energy or peace. I love a good combination of colour and textures. I love people to have fun with their space and not just always play it safe.
From where do you draw inspiration?
It can happen anywhere. Sometimes I’m walking my dog, and I see some interesting colours on a jacket. Or when I’m watching tv, it can be a random documentary, and I might see a shape or pattern or detail that I think I’d like to use in an entirely different context. Fashion is good, because that’s not always safe and neutral. Travelling abroad also helps – or that’s what I tell myself and family!
Do you have favourite areas of a house to work on?
I enjoy working on clients living areas, as there’s so much scope to make impactful changes. There are so many elements to work with, many different textiles, and interactions with colour, finishes, furnishings, artwork. These areas also have a huge impact on how someone feels about coming home.
I do have favourite colours – but these do change. I would never want to keep repeating a feel no matter how successful a previous space was. I love the creating something new for each client. I also love textures, and making textures, colours, and patterns all work harmoniously together.
A project you’re especially proud of?
I often feel pleased with certain aspects of most of my work. Often, it’s when those boundaries have been pushed! A recent job I completed – English Oak, was a great example. It started with the clients wanting to make their laundry and guest bathroom space work better, but grew into redesigning all three of their bathrooms, adding furniture and soft furnishings, shelves, and desks to complete their spaces, and repainting the exterior of their home. I loved that we kept building on their home and adding the layers to really make it feel very completed.
What do you hope clients take away from working with Rebecca Logan Design?
I would hope that I had exceeded what they thought they were looking for, that I had captured the right feel for their space and them. That the experience was enjoyable, and for clients to feel confident in trying different things – often the best results come from pushing past the obvious.
Ultimately, I want them to finish the project thinking, “I absolutely love this. It feels like us and I can’t wait to do it again!”
