When James Botting first walked into Newmarket Central – a heritage-listed hotel springing from the former Newmarket Police Station – he was “speechless”.
“The character, history and uniqueness immediately stood out,” the hotel manager tells Verve. “As the hotel was already established, our focus was on building on what was here and creating a genuine hospitality experience where guests feel welcomed and connected.”
Do you have a favourite part of Newmarket Central?
The Cells and the Sergeant’s House. Both have a strong sense of history and character, but in very different ways. The Cells allows you to really feel the history of the original building, while the Sergeant’s House has its own charm and personality. They’re an important part of the story, and I’d encourage guests to take time to explore them.
What sort of guest will get the most out of staying here?
We welcome couples, families, business travellers, people visiting Auckland for shopping or events, and guests here for medical treatment. I think those who appreciate character, individuality and genuine hospitality will get the most from the experience. Whether they stay for one night or several weeks, we want them to feel comfortable, welcomed and looked after.
Aside from the history, what sets Newmarket Central apart?
For me, it’s the genuine hospitality and the feeling we want guests to have. We’re not trying to be a big corporate hotel; we want people to feel recognised and looked after. Our spacious, flexible suites also provide more of a home-away-from-home experience, particularly for longer stays, families and business or medical travellers. Then there’s the location, with shopping, restaurants, cafes, transport and medical facilities all close by.
What makes Newmarket work so well for a hotel?
Newmarket offers convenience and accessibility while still feeling like a neighbourhood with its own character. We’re close to shopping, restaurants, cafes, public transport, the CBD and major medical facilities, making it a great base for exploring Auckland while having everything you need nearby.
What are your best recommendations for the local area?
I’d definitely recommend exploring Newmarket on foot. There’s great shopping at Westfield, along Broadway and around the boutique laneways of Teed Street and Osborne Lane. For something more relaxed, the Auckland Domain and Museum are close by, while Newmarket has plenty of excellent cafés and restaurants. Take your time and explore the neighbourhood rather than always heading into the CBD. The beauty of staying at Newmarket Central is that you can experience so much of Auckland without travelling far.
What does a great stay in Auckland look like to you?
For me, it’s about relaxing, exploring and enjoying the city at your own pace. Starting the day with a good coffee, discovering a great restaurant, walking around the Domain or exploring Newmarket, then returning somewhere comfortable and welcoming. It’s about enjoying Auckland without feeling rushed.
What do you hope guests remember about their stay?
I hope they remember the unique character and boutique feel. From the moment they arrive, we want it to feel distinctive, thoughtfully presented and full of personality. Most of all, I’d love guests to leave remembering it as somewhere a little different, with its own character and a fantastic Auckland location.
