Digestive symptoms are common, and most of the time are nothing to be concerned about. Bloating after a large meal, occasional heartburn or an irregular bowel motion can all happen from time to time. But when symptoms persist, change or occur alongside other warning signs, it may be time to take a closer look.
Reflux, for example, is experienced on a weekly basis by 10-20% of adults in Australia and New Zealand, but when reflux is measured scientifically, small amounts of acid may enter the oesophagus up to 30 times over a normal day. So, its presence does not necessarily indicate disease. Reflux causing troublesome symptoms more than twice a week, however, warrants discussion with your doctor. Treatment, or further investigation, including Gastroscopy, may be appropriate.
Normal bowel function also varies considerably. Anywhere from three bowel motions a day to three a week can be normal. What matters is knowing what is normal for you. Bowel motions should be comfortable to pass and should not contain visible blood. A persistent change in frequency or form lasting more than six weeks should be assessed.
Other warning signs include unexplained weight loss, iron deficiency anaemia, and persistent abdominal pain. Simple stool tests can also look for infection, inflammation or microscopic blood and help determine whether further investigation is needed.
At Waitematā Endoscopy, our experienced Specialists provide Colonoscopy, Gastroscopy, and other investigations to help distinguish normal digestive variation from problems requiring treatment, giving patients clear answers and reassurance about their gut health.
Most Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy procedures can be arranged within seven working days of referral, making Specialist assessment straightforward when further investigation is recommended.
