Matariki

at Te Whatu Stardome

Auckland’s planetarium Te Whatu Stardome is marking Matariki 2026 with a month-long programme of astronomy, storytelling, live music, wellbeing experiences and community events, including the return of the popular free Matariki Open Day on Friday 10 July.

Central to the programme is Matariki – Ngā Whetū o te Tau Hou / The Stars of the New Year, their signature planetarium show exploring the Matariki star cluster and its significance in Aotearoa and te ao Māori.

Free live performances will feature some of New Zealand’s best musical talents, among them Nganeko, Greatsouth, Mara TK + Iris Little, and Jordyn With a Why. If you’re seeking something more contemplative, join a guided meditation session with Kristina Cavit MNZM of The Kindness Institute, held on selected Sunday mornings. Through cosmic visuals and guided reflection, these sessions weave together hauora and wonder.

The Open Day on 10 July features free 20-minute screenings of the Matariki planetarium show throughout the day (sessions free but ticketed).

From 8-12 July, experience the sounds and feel of te taiao (environment) on a self-guided hīkoi to the tihi (summit) of Maungakiekie One Tree Hill, timed to see the Matariki cluster rising just before dawn.
