Walk this Way: Walk1200km in 2024

How’s this for a New Year’s resolution: walking 1200km in 12 months? Sounds impossible right, but that’s the premise of the Walk1200km challenge, and more than 4700 people did in 2023.

It’s a free, fun and flexible challenge, promoted by Wilderness magazine, that motivates participants into a daily walking habit – the simplest and most effective regular exercise we can get.

To walk 1200km in one year, you need to walk an average of just 3.3km a day (it takes less than 40 minutes daily). But – and here’s the clincher – it will make you fitter, trimmer, healthier, stronger, more productive and happier. Those aren’t just the big promises of the Walk1200km challenge, they are the proven benefits of regular walking.

Countless studies have shown that walking, especially in nature, can reduce blood pressure, de-stress, improve mental cognition and help people recover from injury and illness. It will also tone your body and strengthen bones and muscles.

These benefits are achieved by simply opening your door and going for a stroll.
