Sanctuary Style

A mountainside hideaway in Mallorca has been refreshed and renewed via a renovation that reconnects it to the historic landscape in which it is set.

The spiral staircase has been made following Fibonacci’s “golden ratio”, and has the sculptural feel of an artwork.

Who doesn’t dream of discovering a hidden gem – a somewhat neglected and dilapidated property that turns out to have a storied history – and transforming it into a glorious sanctuary? The owners of this Mallorquin holiday home, situated on the coastline of the Tramuntana Mountains, have done exactly this.

The arched entrance hall and vestibule space includes a stairway to the upper floor. Designed and installed by local architecture firm More Design, the spiral staircase has been made following Fibonacci’s “golden ratio”, and has the sculptural feel of an artwork.

As per the homeowners’ brief to the architect, the key spaces in terms of size are the common areas of the house, rather than the bedrooms. Combined with the linear plan, the result is that from one end of the spacious main living spaces to the other, a series of arches and small passages creates a powerful sense of interconnectedness.

Directly across the entrance hall from the living room is the kitchen. A coffee and conversation nook in the corner of kitchen is furnished with bespoke built-in bench seating. The exquisite butterfly collection is one of the homeowners’ private treasures.

From the sitting rooms through the entrance hall into the expansive kitchen and beyond, there is an organic continuity. The boldly sculptural kitchen island is clad in local stone and features push-open drawers for a seamless, monumental feel.

On the first floor, the resolutely simple master bedroom features beautiful wide-plank, oak-wood floors, a partially built-in bed and built-in shelving and storage.

The master bathroom has a luxuriously smooth tadelakt plaster floor and custom-built vanity counter made from local Binissalem stone.

The key spaces in terms of size are the common areas of the house, rather than the bedrooms.

The pool was intentionally placed some distance from the house, which ensures that more of the property moves into the field of everyday use. The pool area sports beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and the Mediterranean Sea.

The curtained day bed is the ideal finishing touch, enabling holidaymakers to spend hours on end by the pool.

The casual outdoor dining area at the front of the house boasts a beautiful sea view.
